Skin FAQs

Q: What should I expect when I arrive for my appointment?

A: When you arrive at the studio, please check in on the Vagaro app or ring the electronic doorbell. Either way will notify Meg of your arrival and she will come let you into the A/C ASAP! Upon greeting you at the door, Meg will take you back to her treatment room where she will explain the level of undress required for the service you have scheduled and how to position yourself on the table. While you get yourself ready, Meg will stay in the room and get her treatment supplies ready, and make sure she has a chance to answer any last minute questions you may have!

Q. What do I need to do to prepare for my skin consultation?

A: Before coming in for a Skin Consultation, Advanced Skin Analysis, or Acne Intake Session, please take the opportunity to be as detailed as possible with your appointment intake form so Meg has all the information she needs to prepare for your appointment ahead of time. Please be thorough - list the brand and product names for everything you currently apply to your skin, morning and night as well as any supplements, medications, etc. that you take or use. It’s even better if you would fill that out AND bring your current home-care products with you to your appointment. Ingredient decks change all the time, so looking at the one on your bottles is often preferable to the google machine!

Q: Do I need to do anything special before my facial with you?

A: Please come in for a facial with clean skin. Ideally, do your PM regimen the night before your appointment and then rinse your face with cool water in the morning and apply nothing else to your skin. This is for the sake of the photos we will take with the Observ520x, which will tell us much more about your skin without products on top!

Q: What exactly is a facial?

A: A standard “basic” facial at most clinics and spas includes a double-cleanse, exfoliation, massage, mask, and finishing products. The closest thing Meg has to that is a Custom Facial, which is never cookie cutter and rarely the same twice. The purpose of most facials is to clean out the pores and get your skin looking and feeling healthier. Meg also prioritizes client education during her facials, so she will tell you as much (or more) as you want to know about what she is doing and why, as well as using the time while you’re on the table to ask questions, dig deeper, and figure out the root causes of the skin concerns you have and what she would recommend you do to address those.

Q: What if I’m not sure which skin service to book?

A: If you’re not sure what to book, we recommend you schedule a Skin Consultation with Meg so she can take a look at your skin, better understand the changes you’re hoping to make, and then recommend the right treatments to help you achieve your goals.

Q: What do I need to do after a facial?

A: Typically nothing special. Meg usually recommends skipping any “active” products the night after a facial and resuming your usual regimen the following day, however certain procedures (microneedling, peels) may require more time before returning to your regular daily routine. After a facial that involves more extractions (Acne Treatments, primarily), Meg strongly recommends icing the skin

Q: Does it hurt?

A: It depends! Most parts of a facial don’t hurt at all. If you are coming in for extractions, you can probably anticipate some discomfort, but otherwise you should have a very nice, painless experience.

Q: What should I expect during my appointment?

A: When you arrive at the studio, please check in on the Vagaro app or ring the electronic doorbell. Either way will notify Meg of your arrival and she will come let you in to the A/C ASAP!

Once your service begins, Meg will guide you through the process each step of the way, checking in to make sure you're feeling safe and comfortable. She'll let you know when the service is complete so you can begin getting dressed again while she begins her cleaning and disinfection process. When you're all set and ready to go, Meg will walk you out front to the lobby giving you aftercare instructions and to make any product recommendations that may apply to your needs, she'll ring you up/take payment for the appointment, and reschedule you for the appropriate timeframe to maintain optimal results. This is a great time to review any questions that may have come up, too!

Q. Will getting waxed hurt?

A: This is a little like asking someone if getting a tattoo hurts. Everyone's answer is different, and the people who say "not at all" and act tough are faking it. When you get waxed, I am ripping your hair out from way down at the root. This is great, because it is going to grow back finer, the root will become weaker and hurt less to pull in the future, and some hairs won't grow back at all. For all that benefit, and a sting that lasts for only a second, I'd say it's worth it.

Smaller areas and less sensitive areas of the body hurt less. It's pretty much common sense stuff. Don't worry about it. I'll take great care of you.

Make sure you're hydrated and got a good night's sleep, too. Stress, sleep deprivation, and dehydration can all make you more sensitive.

Q: What do I do after I wax?

A:  Immediately after your wax, Meg will put a soothing serum on your skin. After that, it's really important that you keep the area clean for the rest of the day and ideally that night. Don't go swimming, go straight to the gym, or keep touching your legs to feel how silky they are after a wax -- just leave the depilated area alone. If it's a super hot and sweaty afternoon, as it often is here in Texas, go ahead and rinse off with a cool shower before bed.

DO NOT TAN. Really, ever. But at the very least for 48 hours after a wax. Your dead skin cells come off with the hair, leaving you ever so slightly more prone to burning, and a freshly waxed but sunburned bikini line is not cute.

Q: Can I get a bikini/Brazilian wax on my period?

A: Yep. We just ask that if you are getting a bikini or brazilian wax on your cycle, you come in wearing a menstrual cup or fresh tampon, or make use of the supplies provided for you in the restroom. This can also be a more sensitive time to wax, so take an OTC pain reliever before you head over if you think you need to.

Q: I was shaving but want to try waxing. What do I do?

A: As mentioned above, your hair MUST be at least 1/4" long in order to come up with the wax. If you have been shaving, you should probably wait between 2 and 4 weeks to wax after your last shave, depending on your rate of growth. If you're just switching to waxing, it can take a couple of rounds before we can get all the hair, since each follicle's growth cycle is not synchronized with the rest. That means if you want a perfectly smooth bikini wax for your wedding / honeymoon / spring break / summer vacation, you're going to want to plan 2-3 waxes, 3-4 weeks apart for optimal results!

Q: Will you put a numbing cream on me?

A: Nah. You won't need it. Plus they're messy, you might be allergic to something in them, they can cause reactions, etc. But most importantly, you won't need it.

Q: What if I get ingrown hairs?

A: Don't pick. Never pick. Everyone has different ways of dealing with pesky ingrowns. My favorites are a really great body wash with an antimicrobial scrubby mitten, exfoliating gently in circles, and following it up with Serious Serum. Did I mention NOT to pick?

Q: What are some reasons a person shouldn't wax?

A: Medications that thin your skin or dry you out are bad news for waxing. Ask your doctor if you're not sure. Here's a list of things to be careful of:

WARNING: Waxing is never done on clients taking Accutane and is not recommended for clients taking Retin A, Renova, Differin or other types of skin thinning acne medications. Please read the label carefully and consult your dermatologist if you are taking any medication or using any topical cream that contains these medications. Individuals do react differently to these medications and sometimes waxing can be done if proper patch testing is completed.

  • Accutane (Acne medication) - You must be off this medication treatment course a minimum of one (1) year prior to waxing.

  • Adapalene (Acne medication)

  • Alustra (Retin A)

  • Avage (See Tazorac - Acne medication)

  • Avita (See Retin A)

  • Differin (Acne medication)

  • Isotretinoin (See Accutane)

  • Renova (See Retin A)

  • Retin A (Acne and Anti-aging medication)

  • Tazarac (Acne medication)

  • Tazarotene (See Tazorac)

  • Tretinoin (See Retin A)

CAUTION: If you are currently using any of the following, you must let me know. These products can make the skin more sensitive. Thin, sensitive skin is more vulnerable to lifting and sensitivity during waxing.

  • Other Acne medications not listed above

  • Bleaching agents for hair (used mostly for upper lip)

  • Bleaching agents for pigmentation of skin (Hydraquinone, Trilumena)

  • Previous chemical depilatories such as Nair

  • Benzoyl Peroxide (ProActive)

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic, Lactic)

  • Oral Antibiotics

  • Topical Antibiotics

  • Retinol

  • Salicylic Acid

  • Other exfoliants

PRECAUTIONS & CONSIDERATIONS: Please read these valuable guidelines.

  • Sunburned, irritated or areas with open skin cannot be waxed.

  • Moles cannot be waxed.

  • You must wait a minimum of seven (7) days before waxing after a light chemical peel or Microdermabrasion.

  • Waxing cannot be performed if you have been in a tanning booth the same day.

  • Waxing cannot be performed if you have had laser skin resurfacing within the past year.

  • Waxing cannot be performed if you have had a physician administered peel within the past two (2) years.

  • If irritation should occur, recommend you use an antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin to keep the area continually moist to avoid infection and scabbing.

  • No sun/tanning booths for 2 days following a waxing treatment. Extra precaution should be taken if using tanning accelerators. Wait 2-3 days to wax before/after tanning with accelerators.

  • No hot baths for 24 hours following a body waxing treatment.

  • No abrasives for 24 hours following a waxing treatment.

  • No deodorants for 24 hours following an underarm waxing treatment.

  • Women may experience extra sensitivity to waxing up to a week prior to the beginning of their menses.

  • Diabetic people should ask their doctor before getting waxed, due to potentially compromised healing and sensation.
